Looking back at the most memorable moments from our second Annual Recital on 10th March 2019.
Planning a recital is, although exhausting, a very rewarding process. Students who usually play in a solo setting during their lessons get a stage to #perform with their fellow students. For some, it is a platform to share music with an audience. For others, it is a platform to face their fears and perform on stage. Whatever the reason, it is an exciting process with so many things to learn.
I’m sharing with you some of my most memorable moments from last year’s recital.
Rehearsals
The recital took place at the Furtados Store, where it is possible to get distracted by a variety of things. There isn’t much you can do about it except make yourself immune to the distractions. Here’s a small snippet of the distraction-practice we never forget to do before a recital. It works! And the kids love it!
“On Recital day, it doesn’t matter to me whether you give a good or a bad performance. It’s a beautiful place to be in- Everyone in the audience is rooting for you. They want to enjoy your music. They want YOU to enjoy your music. So why not just go up on stage and give it your best shot? Playing at a recital, although exhausting, is a very rewarding process.”
My former teacher, colleague and mentor- Sonam Lodhi- performing Caprice à la Boléro by Clara Schumann. Sonam introduced the piece and its composer, and gave a brilliant performance. Most of my students last year were young women, and I’m sure the story of Clara Schumann and Sonam’s performance inspired them.
Performance with Nicholas
To end the recital, my good friend and drummer Nicholas Umrethi and I performed Song For My Father by Horace Silver. The bluesy tune had everyone tapping their toes.
The Prize Distribution
You can see the joy on the students’ faces as everyone applauded their efforts at the end of the recital. Special thanks to Furtados who helped arrange everything from the invitations, programme notes to certificates and goodie bags.
The Photographs
For me, the recital day was over even before I knew it. It was a busy day with lots of preparations, lots of running around. It was an important day for me and I’m glad I had someone in charge of capturing these moments. #GauriShetye is a very talented photographer who covered the event.
“See you at the next recital!”
